This story broke last night and into this morning as more details about what happened in Benghazi have gradually come out. Ambassador Chris Stevens was a fighter for the Libyan people as they toppled former dictator Moammar Gadhafi and helped secure the rebels peace. This truly is a tragedy that should never have happened.
He was one of the staunchest supporters of the rebel cause and helped secure help from the west during their fight for freedom. Those that put in motion the chain of events that caused Mr. Stevens and 3 other Americans deaths should be held accountable for their actions.
The cause of the rioting was a YouTube video that portrayed Islam and one of its holiest figures in a degrading and false way. The video was created by a real estate developer with a negative view of Islam. The video was found and shown in Egypt causing some to protest and retaliate against the U.S. embassy in Cairo. The situation was handled but the word of the video spread to Libya and a small group took it upon themselves to retaliate for ONE mans misguided views. The angry mob then attacked and murdered innocent Americans that had no direct connection to what was said in the video, other than all being from the U.S.
It must be stressed that this was a small group of people in two countries that took an amateur video, that in no way reflects the overwhelming view of the American people towards Islam, to literally and reacted in the wrong way. Those that committed this crime should be held accountable for their actions similar to how we would treat criminals in our own country.
In this country we have freedom of speech, but with that freedom comes responsibility. We stand for religious freedom for all, no matter what religion. We are Americans first, we are brothers and sisters with all races, religions and creeds around the world. We show respect for other nations and their cultures, not degrade them. We do this because we expect others to do the same to us. Think of the golden rule.
The man that created this video is in the minority in his views of Islam, but his action has had a clear reaction by those he has offended. He is just as responsible as those in Libya that killed four Americans. The mobs reaction was wrong, but we must not blame an entire nation or religion because of a few poor decisions. In this country what the man did by making his video is legal by our laws, but I and most Americans do not support or encourage such behavior. What he did was wrong and inexcusable morally. He is just as evil as those that killed the four Americans.
All actions have consequences.
