The financial debate seems to never end in this country. It all started with the debt ceiling debate in 2011, that put us on the path we find ourselves on today. The can was kicked down the road and the "fiscal cliff" agreement on January 1 kicked the debt debate down the road to March. Now certain Democrats are telling the President to simply ignore the Republicans and use legal means to solve the debt ceiling problem. I have to disagree strongly with this view.
We find ourselves in a time where the Republican party is fractured into the conservatives, religious extremists and the Tea Partiers. The Democrats have to figure out how to work with one of these groups. The Republican party is unable to work together, best example is they could not muster enough votes for Speaker Boehner's "fiscal cliff" plan and it failed. The end result was the House was forced to vote on the President's plan. I do not think we should push only the President's agenda, I think the President should work with a select group of Republicans (the Speaker, Mitch McConnell and a few others) that will offer up constructive ideas and vote for any bill that is created from an exchange of ideas.
It only takes a few Republicans to make a difference, the party should simply leave out those among them that are "no, no" to everything and encourage those with constructive ideas and a willingness to compromise.
