Many have called the President's speech yesterday "progressive" others have said that it is an end to Reaganism and that this was his first true speech where he stated his real liberal views. This was a statement speech for me. In this speech he laid out his plans for the next four years and what he wants his legacy to be. He will surely address our countries fiscal issues and gun control in his State of the Union speech but to me this speech was more of what he ran on in 2008. It was a "Hope" and "Change" type of speech in which he talked about climate change, gay rights and bringing the country together. It was a shorter speech (over 200 words less) compared to his first inaugural address. But he was able to focus on what I believe he wants his legacy to be. He wants to put this country on a path of energy independence and invest in all manner of fuels that will get us there. He wants to break down the barriers society has built to keep shame and exclude gays and he wants this country to come together and look to the future not dwell on the past.
People say that this speech signaled an end to Reaganism and a new era of progressive ideals, well I think the ideas of Reagan live on. I think Reaganism, Camelot, the New Deal, Jeffersonism, Hamiltonism and every type of "ism" lives on because all Presidents have left their mark on this country. Some more than others, but in a little way our country today has been built and molded by those that have come before us. It is up to us to build a country to put future generations of Americans in the same position to succeed as we have been put into. We must solve the problems of today so they do not become the problems of tomorrow. We must repair and put in place the foundations for our future generations to succeed and we must do it today. I think that is what the President was talking about. He does not want to wait until tomorrow, he wants to put America on the path to succeed now.
